Walter Benson Vernon, M.D., F.A.C.S

Dr. Vernon is from Dubuque, Iowa. After graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, he completed his residency in general surgery at Duke University. He completed a fellowship in transplant surgery at both University of Wisconsin and Duke University. Before coming to Denver he taught on the surgery faculty at Duke University as Associate Director of the ICU, Director of Pancreas Transplantation, and a member of the trauma team. Dr. Vernon came to Denver in 1992, and helped expand the Porter Hospital transplant service to include pancreas and liver transplantation. He performs transplants at the Presbyterian/St Luke's Medical Center with Drs Asolati and Heffron. He has served on the SurgOne Board of Directors and was President of SurgOne, 2006-8. He has served on the Board of Directors for UNOS, the Colorado Medical Society (past president), Donor Alliance, the Denver Indian Health & Family Services, and Arapahoe Douglas Elbert Medical Society (past president). His professional interests include transplant surgery, surgical care of the critically ill, pancreatic and biliary tract surgery, endocrine surgery, wound healing, hyperbaric medicine, breast surgery and wound care. He always enjoys a challenging case.

Dr. Vernon is married and has two adult children. His interests outside of the office include flying, skiing, hiking, and reading.
