Walter Benson Vernon, M.D., F.A.C.S
Dr. Vernon is from Dubuque, Iowa. After graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, he completed his residency in general surgery at Duke University, where he befriended Dr. Warren Kortz. He completed a fellowship in transplant surgery at both University of Wisconsin and Duke University. Before coming to Denver he taught on the surgery faculty at Duke University as associate director of the ICU, director of pancreas transplantation, and a member of the trauma team. Dr. Vernon joined Dr. Warren Kortz in Denver in 1992, and helped expand the Porter Hospital transplant service to include pancreas and liver transplantation. He serves as medical director of the Centura Transplant Services at Porter Adventist Hospital. He serves on the board of directors of UNOS, Colorado Medical Society, and Donor Alliance. His professional interests include transplant surgery, surgical care of the critically ill, pancreatic and biliary tract surgery, endocrine surgery, and breast surgery. He always enjoys a challenging case.
Dr. Vernon is married and has two adult children. His interests outside of the office include flying, skiing, hiking, and reading.
