Victoria Valdes, MD, is a general surgeon with SurgOne specializing in bariatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and robotic surgery. Her approach to surgical care is comprehensive and highly personalized, combining advanced surgical techniques with a focus on understanding each patient’s overall health, individual needs, and long-term goals.
Dr. Valdes grew up in South Texas in the Rio Grande Valley in a medical family. Her father is a general surgeon, and her mother worked as an ICU nurse. Watching their commitment to caring for others inspired her own interest in medicine and shaped a philosophy she continues to bring to her patients today: meet people where they are, understand their individual circumstances, and help them find the best path forward.
She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology and minors in Chemistry and English. She earned her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston before completing her general surgery residency at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts. She remained at Lahey for additional specialized training with an emphasis on bariatric, robotic, and laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery.
General Surgery
Dr. Valdes was drawn to general surgery because it allows her to address both the medical and surgical aspects of a patient’s condition. She values being able to look beyond an individual procedure to understand the bigger picture and provide comprehensive care.
Her general surgery expertise includes:
- Minimally invasive, laparoscopic, robotic, and open surgery
- Hernia repair
- Gallbladder surgery
- Bowel surgery
- Foregut surgery, including hiatal hernia
- Minimally invasive abdominal surgery
- Skin cancer and skin lesion removal
- Mass removal, biopsies, and lipoma removal
- Thyroid and parathyroid conditions
- Diverticular disease
- Benign colorectal and colon conditions
Bariatric Surgery & Weight Management
Dr. Valdes has a special interest in bariatric medicine and appreciates the opportunity it provides to develop a lasting relationship with her patients. Rather than viewing bariatric surgery as a single procedure, she approaches weight management as a multidisciplinary process that addresses multiple factors affecting a patient’s health.
She particularly enjoys the coaching relationship that develops through bariatric care—working alongside patients as they make meaningful changes and pursue better health and quality of life.
Her bariatric surgical expertise includes:
- Laparoscopic and robotic sleeve gastrectomy
- Laparoscopic and robotic gastric bypass
- Gastric band removal
A Compassionate, Whole-Person Approach
Central to Dr. Valdes’ philosophy is treating the person, not simply the condition. She describes her approach as comprehensive, compassionate, professional, and focused on looking at the bigger picture. She takes time to understand her patients and believes successful care begins by meeting each person where they are.
Her dedication to compassionate care has been recognized with a Gold Humanism Award, and she has also received recognition for her work as an educator. During her general surgery residency at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, she served in leadership roles including Academic Chief and Director of Wellness and Communication.
Away from the operating room, Dr. Valdes enjoys spending time with her family, including her young daughter and two dogs. She loves cooking and baking—particularly making sourdough bread—as well as hiking, crocheting, crafting, and learning new skills. Whether in the kitchen, outdoors, or working on a new project, she enjoys creating, learning, and continually finding ways to improve her craft.
